According to Tony Robbins, emotion is the force of life. It’s what drives us.
Effective leaders have the ability to consistently move themselves and others into action because they understand the invisible forces that shape us.
Those “invisible forces” are our emotions. And our emotions are derived from the six human needs:
- Certainty (control, predicting outcome)
- Uncertainty (variety, surprises, problems)
- Significance (I’m special, unique)
- Connection and love
- Growth
- Contribution beyond ourselves (giving)
The first four needs are personality needs, the last two are spiritual needs. And it’s those two needs that truly fulfill us as people.
Good leaders need to recognize what drives the people we lead. We need to take into account their emotions and whether their needs are being met to perform at their best.
